Marvel reveals just a taste of what's to come with the first epic trailer.
That was my first takeaway from this past week's Spider-Man: No Way Home trailer revealed at CinemaCon. The trailer went on to shatter the 24 hour viewing record of Avengers Endgame, which shows the massive interests fans have in the movie. In the film, Peter Parker (Tom Holland) deals with the fallout from the world finding out he's Spider-Man, and turns to Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) for help. Parker gets a lot more than he bargained for when he realizes that they have tampered with the concept of the multiverse, leading to a few surprises along the way. I am going to share my reactions to the best moments in the trailer...let's dive in!
First off, I am absolutely loving the laid back, nonchalant Doctor Strange we see when Peter goes to see him at the Sanctum Sanctorum. His home also has a snowy, wintery feel to it, and it could possibly play into the rumors that the film takes place around Christmas, although the rest of the trailer does not give off that vibe. Strange devises a spell that will get everyone to forget that Peter is Spider-Man, despite Peter's protesting that his friends and family will forget. I could see this being Peter's moral dilemma after the last movie he was happy for MJ (Zendaya) to know his secret and they appear to have begun a relationship.
We get brief snippets of Strange pushing Peter into his ancestral body, and a set piece aboard a train, but early signs show Strange stepping into the mentor role akin to Tony Stark's (Robert Downey Jr.) in Spider-Man: Homecoming, as he will guide Peter through his most recent dilemma. Throughout the process of getting everyone to forget Peter is Spider-Man, they seem to have opened themselves into the multiverse which in turn is messing with their reality. Strange warns Peter that the multiverse is something they know very little about, although fans by this point know quite a lot after Disney+'s Loki this past summer. We also get a brief look at J. Jonah Jameson (J.K Simmons) and a possible tease of Matt Murdock aka Daredevil being Peter's lawyer, although that is unconfirmed at this point. While Strange carries a heavy presence in the trailer, he of course was not the biggest reveal.
After months and months of teasing, and a slip of the tongue by Alfred Molina, it was finally confirmed that Doctor Octopus from Spider-Man 2 will return in the film. For just under a year, it was rumored (yet basically all but confirmed) that No Way Home will bring back villains from previous Spider-Man films, as well as Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield as their respective Spider-Men. The multiverse is the perfect way to bring these characters back and into the MCU. Although we don't get a look at Maguire or Garfield, I would be shocked if they weren't involved in the film at this point. I also think the trailer is purposely edited to mislead viewers, leaving things out that will be surprises in the film. For example, in the moment above with Doc Ock's reveal, I think that he is actually speaking with Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man and not Holland's. It wouldn't make sense for Doc Ock to know who Peter Parker is in the MCU, but he would certainly recognize his universe's Peter Parker. But it was great to see Doc Ock back, as he was one of the better villains in the Raimi series. Speaking of which...
The moment I was not expecting at all was the Goblin bomb and Norman Osborn's (Willem Dafoe) trademark laugh just before the Doc Ock reveal. While I had read for months and months that Dafoe was rumored to be in the film, I always thought to myself it was too good to be true and unlikely. I think that this ultimately confirms that Marvel is building the fabled Sinister Six to go up against Spider-Man but in a unique way: the multiverse. With Green Goblin and Doc Ock confirmed in the trailer for sure, along with Jamie Foxx's Electro returning, that's three of the six members of the villainous team. The trailer teases the possibility of Lizard and Sandman, who both appeared in previous films. My money also is on Vulture (Micheal Keaton) from the MCU returning to establish a more personal connection for Holland's Spider-Man in the fight. I think Marvel has another trick up their sleeve for the final member of the team. It could be the return of Jake Gyllenhaal's Mysterio from Spider-Man: Far From Home, or even (although in my opinion, an extremely far-fetched possibility) Tom Hardy's Venom from the Sony Venom movies.
Spider-Man: No Way Home is gearing up to be one of the most epic superhero films of all time, and that is saying a lot considering the Avengers movies we have gotten in the last ten years. I think that Marvel has a bonafide hit on their hands, and the likely scenario that Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield return will send fan expectations through the roof. I feel we are basically getting a live-action version of the animated Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse movie from three years ago. As a lifelong fan of Spider-Man, I cannot express my utmost excitement for this film. An epic story in the MCU, the introduction of the Sinister Six, and three Spider-Men fighting together all in one film will truly be a sight to behold. I could have never imagined something this epic to happen even five years ago, but the wait till December 17th will be a long one. I'm not even sure that Marvel needs to show another trailer before it releases, as they waited so long to release this one just four months before the release date. Hopefully the film does not get delayed any further due to the ongoing COVID pandemic...as I fear the Spider-Man fan in me couldn't take another delay!
