While plenty of trailers and first looks were released today as part of DC FanDome, none were as anticipared as the second trailer for The Batman. The first trailer premiered just over a year ago at a time where only 25% of the movie had been shot, and now the film is complete and deep in post-production ahead of its March 4th release date. Let’s dive into some of the trailer’s interesting moments.
From the looks of it, it seems that Robert Pattinson’s Bruce Wayne is a more unhinged version of the character. We know that the movie takes place early on in Batman’s crime fighting career, and he seems to be working out his anger through his vendetta against Gotham City’s underworld. Lots of shots of Batman involve him yelling, screaming, or ruthlessly taking down criminals, something that his trusted ally Alfred (our first look at Andy Serkis’ take on the character) notes to him. Also interesting to note the scars/wounds on Alfred's face. Was this in the movie or at some point during the past? I think this Batman will lean very hard into the tortured soul-aspect of the character, one who is still coming to terms with the death of his parents and his personal crusade. I think Pattinson’s version will be the most ruthless take on the character yet. As for Pattinson, he seems to fit the part quite well and has the Bat voice down pat. I think he'll make a great Bruce Wayne/Batman.
The action in the trailer is top notch in my opinion, especially what appears to be a big breakout sequence in Arkham Asylum. We also get more looks at the Batmobile, a more simplistic version than other Batman films in the past. One thing that slightly concerns me is the fact that bullets appear to bounce right off of Batman no matter how many are being fired. That is very, very impressive for a suit that is supposedly homemade and not as intricate as Batsuits in past movies. It was a bit distracting and nearly Superman-esque, taking me out of the noir-filled, realistic world of the movie. Not one criminal ever thinks to shoot Batman in the mouth area?! Hopefully the capabilities of the suit is something that is addressed in the movie.
We also get quite a few new looks at Selina Kyle/Catwoman (Zoe Kravitz) and it’s clear that she will be an integral part of the story. I like the dynamic between her and Batman highlighted in the trailer, they seem to have hit the relationship between the two very well. It looks like she is also in the early stages of her career, and we may not get the full Catwoman costume until the very end of the film at the very least, or maybe not even until the sequel. Kravitz also sports many different looks as Kyle, hinting at her taking on various personas to complete her heists. She also appears to be very interested in who Batman is under the mask, even saying "maybe we're not so different" to him. Expect to see Kravitz sticking around for a sequel or two!
Something the trailer does not touch too much on is the overall plot of the movie. Yes, we see more of Riddler (Paul Dano) and Penguin (Colin Ferrell) but we still don’t know what the story is other than this Riddler being given a serial killer-vibe. I suspect that this version of Riddler will have some sort of personal tie to Bruce Wayne, or this is what the two trailers are leading us to believe. Dano thrives with these types of characters and I think he will make a great villain for the movie. Ferrell has mentioned in the past that his role as Penguin is not a big one; only having a few scenes, which surprises me of how prevalent he is featured in the trailer. Maybe it lays the groundwork for Penguin to be the main antagonist in a sequel someday?
Overall I thought the trailer was great and it really sets up a unique take on Batman mythos. Director Matt Reeves has said that the film will be a noir and more of a detective story than other Batman films. I am really loving the noir, gothic approach to Gotham City as well. Combine that with great action sequences and a thrilling personal character arc for Bruce Wayne, and we may just have a great Batman movie on our hands in March. I suspect will we get one more trailer before the movie releases, possibly around the time of the Super Bowl. I, for one, cannot wait until we finally get to see this movie after so many pandemic-induced delays. The Batman releases March 4th, 2022.
