Another episode this week for The Mandalorian! This episode picks up right after last week's with Mando and The Child seeking out more Mandalorians to help reunite The Child with his people and home planet. For this mission, he must transport a precious cargo: eggs in the care of the mysterious Frog Lady. Did the episode live up to the hype? Let's dive right in. WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD!
1) SNOOZEFEST
No disrespect to the show, but this was a total filler episode. Other than "Mando looking for more Mandalorians", absolutely nothing changed narratively for the show. We have known for quite some time that Mando needs assistance to get The Child back to his planet, and we're really at the same place narratively after this episode. Sure, there may be more to the Frog Lady than we know right now but the episode was pretty boring in my opinion other than maybe two to three action sequences which were relatively bland, especially compared to last week's premiere episode with the Kryat Dragon. While there were some unique Easter eggs and an appearance by the New Republic, I think the show needs to pick up the pace and really dive into some answers as to how Mando and Moff Gideon (who still hasn't appeared this season FYI) will cross paths in their conflict over The Child.
2) BABY YODA'S MOMENTS
This episode was definitely what I would call a "Baby Yoda" episode. While the narrative has been pretty much stalled, a humorous subplot of the episode (depending on how you look at it) was that The Child kept eating the Frog Lady's eggs, which was the precious cargo that Mando needed to help deliver. What makes this even worse is when later on in the episode the Frog Lady explains that the eggs are the last of her kind and her husband needs to fertilize them once they get to him. However, The Child continues to snack on them in secret despite Mando telling him to stop after catching him twice. He even gets to sneak one last egg as a snack at the very end of the episode. This is also in addition to The Child eating a baby spider in an egg that led to a spider attack at the end of the episode. It led to a lot of "cute" moments for The Child, although it did anger some viewers. No word on if the Frog Lady will find out about The Child's appetite and if she does...well best of luck to Mando and The Child!
3) WHAT'S NEXT?
As I mentioned earlier, this episode was definitely a filler episode and did little to expand the narrative of the season. After last week's Boba Fett reveal, there was absolutely no follow up on that tease. Word broke over the weekend that Disney+ is reportedly beginning to film a Boba Fett miniseries starting this week, so who knows if we will even Boba again this season. Hopefully this week's episode starts to unfold the bigger picture of the season and have Mando cross paths with rumored characters such as Ahsoka Tano (Rosario Dawson) or returning characters such as Greef Karga (Carl Weathers) and Cara Dune (Gina Carano). Because I think the show really can't afford to have another filler episode, not at this point. I feel that even last week's episode was a filler as well but it got saved by the Boba Fett tease and the introduction of Cobb Vanth. It can be forgiven if the season has a "slow start", but things have to pick up eventually right? Only time will tell.
What did you think of "The Passenger"? Was it better than I thought it was or was it just a filler episode in your opinion? Let me know in the comments below and look for my next post about Chapter 11 later this week!
