Another week of The Mandalorian, and after three episodes I can finally say that things are kicking into high gear for Mando and The Child. This week's episode takes off just as Mando, The Child and the Frog Lady are arriving on the moon Trask to deliver the Frog Lady to her husband. Mando gets roped into a mission when he crosses paths with other Mandalorians on the moon who have a surprising connection to past Star Wars shows. Let's take a look at what happened. WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD!
1) CLONE WARS AND REBELS CONNECTIONS
After Mando gets crossed by a sea captain promising to bring him to other Mandalorians and The Child tossed into a Mamacore's cage under water, things are looking dire for them before three Mandalorians come to their rescue. After defeating the ship crew, Mando recovers The Child unharmed and thanks the Mandalorians. To his surprise, they all remove their helmets, which is supposedly against the creed of the Mandalorians. Bo-Katan Kryze (Katee Sackhoff), Koska Reeves (Mercedes Varnado) and Axe Woves (Simon Kassianides) alert Mando that they need his help. He refuses based on their removing of their helmets.
Star Wars fans will easily recognize Bo-Katan, who appeared in the Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars: Rebels television shows and was also voiced by Sackhoff. This connection also expanded the world of The Mandalorian, as Bo-Katan had the Darksaber in those shows and is looking for it after it was stolen from her. How did Gideon come into possession of the Darksaber? She also gives Mando an interesting piece of information that we will get to in a bit!
2) STORY FINALLY GETTING EXCITING
If you've been keeping up with my Mandalorian posts over the last couple of weeks, you'll know that I've said numerous times that this season has been particularly slow narrative-wise. I'm glad to say that Chapter 11 finally saw things picking up. As I mentioned earlier, Bo-Katan's search for the Darksaber fits right into the narrative because we know that Moff Gideon is in possession of it, hopefully setting up a showdown in the near future. Moff Gideon even appeared in this episode (finally!), albeit very briefly and in the form of a hologram. We also learn that Gideon has an Imperial fleet. How strong is this fleet? Is it on par with The Empire's fleet in the Original Trilogy? While these details are minor at the moment, it does really open up the narrative for the show and now there are numerous exciting paths that the story can take from here. With the connections from past Star Wars television shows heading right on a collision course with Moff Gideon's plans, I expect lots of fast pace action from here on out! But the biggest reveal near the end of the episode is the most exciting...
3)AHSOKA TANO
After Mando successfully aids Bo-Katan and her crew in taking the Imperial ship, she gives him a new direction in his quest to find the Jedi to reunite The Child with his people. She directs him to Calodan on the planet of Corvus, where the Jedi Ashoka Tano is currently residing. Finally after all the teases for the past year, this sets up Ashoka Tano's first live action appearance in Star Wars canon. Ashoka Tano was a major character in both Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars: Rebels. She was first introduced as the padawan of Anakin Skywalker, and over time became one of his nemesis's, and over time became a fan favorite. She is heavily rumored to be played by Rosario Dawson, but Disney has remained tight lipped on this.
Other than the return of Boba Fett, Ashoka Tano's appearance is what fans have been looking forward to the most. How will she help Mando and The Child? What has she been up to since the end of Star Wars: Rebels? I feel these answers are coming either during Chapter 12 or Chapter 13. With Chapter 13 being directed by Dave Filoni, who developed and created both television shows that Ahsoka Tano was a part of, so I expect that episode to be very Ahsoka Tano-centric. But I really hope she appears next week so the show can capitalize on the faster narrative pace this episode put it on. I will say that director Bryce Dallas Howard did a fantastic job behind the camera this week, returning after helming Chapter 4 back in season one. After three episodes, I can say I'm excited for the direction the show appears to be going in.
What did you think of Chapter 11? Are you excited about the direction the show is going in or is it still too slow for you? Did you even watch after The Child "got cancelled" after last week's episode? Place your comments below and tell me what you thought! Until next week everyone!
